Choosing Your Breast Implant Size Takes Time
Breast augmentation has recently become the leading elective cosmetic procedure, with 347,000 operations in 2007 (according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons). The number of breast augmentations increased 6% over 2006...and a whopping 921% over those performed in 1992.
This and other procedures have become so popular that it seems we'll be seeing cosmetic surgery centers in the malls soon. What's fueling the growth? Popularity in the media such as Dr. 90210 has simply brought plastic surgery out in the open from behind closed doors.
Breast augmentation, of course, has happened non-surgically for years. Bras stuffed with socks and tissue paper, silicone inserts taped to the skin, and breast enhancement pills have all been popular methods to create a fuller bust line.
One of the curious problems in breast augmentation has to do with the woman's choice in implant size. Far too many women have undergone subsequent surgeries after becoming dissatisfied with their choice in implant size. It's a common problem discussed widely in plastic surgery forums and around the web.
Perhaps the problem stems from the methods involved in helping a woman to choose her ideal breast implant size. One typical practice is to have a woman try on various sizes of implants for a few minutes while in the doctor's office. Standing in front of a mirror, donning a sports bra filled with a plastic shell of saline or silicone, the patient tries to judge the right size for her.
After leaving the office she might be encouraged to try filling a plastic bag with a volume of rice comparable to that of a breast implant. If you've never tried it, imagine this: a square plastic bag filled with rice and stuffed into a round bra cup. It simply can not look good, much less accurate.
One recent solution to the breast size choice dilemma is a breast sizing system which is designed to be worn comfortably and discretely for extended periods of time.
